Second Hump Day of the Year!

Students, please peruse the following:

Ninth graders:
  • You received twenty (20) new vocabulary words today.  We also listened to Nikki Giovanni.  You also wrote a story with your vocabulary words.
  • You have homework due tomorrow!  If you do not turn in your homework, you will stay in my room at lunch, watch me eat, and work on your homework for a late grade.
  • Test on twenty words is Tuesday September, 6th.
Juniors:
  • Your partner-published your story today.  A few brave and valiant students read their stories to the class.  Simply splendid!
  • We also listened to Kevin Dwyer's favorite, Babs Ehrenreich, and discussed Nickel and Dimed
  • Tomorrow and Friday, you will write your in-class essay on Nickel and Dimed.  You should bring your book, and you may have post-its in your book upon which you have written notes.

Students,

Today we did the following:

Ninth Graders read the Paul Auster piece "Why Write?"  You will receive a daily grade for your in-class notes. 
You also have written homework due this Thursday.  You received your assignment today in class.

Juniors received articles to read and annotate.  To that end, please note the following:
  • "MTPOD" and "A Plague of Tics" are due Tuesday, September 6th.
  • "A Modest Proposal" is due Thursday, September 8th.
  • Your story is due TONIGHT on turnitin.com.  Bring a hard copy of your story to class tomorrow.
  • Beginning Tuesday, September 6th, I may quiz you on any or all words from your first list.  Please peruse that list daily until you know the words.
  • Bring Nickel and Dimed to class tomorrow through this Friday.

Students, today we did the following:

Ninth graders:  you took a vocabulary quiz - class average? 94.76!  Tomorrow you will receive your first homework assignment.  Keep working on that summer reading assignment!

Juniors:  Today you took a quote test.  If you were absent today, you will make up the test on Friday.

Tomorrow we will, inter alia, review answers to the W/H M/C questions that you completed last week.

Also, your vocabulary story is due tomorrow BEFORE midnight.  Here is your information for turnitin.com:

Students, you all have tests tomorrow as follows:

Ninth graders will be tested on the following ten words:  amiable, diligent, ebullient, empathetic, gregarious, insightful, jocular, laconic, steadfast, and vivacious.
Also, Monday is the last day to submit your summer reading project for 10 bonus points.

Juniors will enjoy a quote test on Wuthering Heights or The Return of the Native.
Tues., we will review the WH M/C and, if time, the quote test; Tuesday evening, you will also submit your vocabulary story on turnitin.com.
Wednesday, you will bring a hard copy of your vocabulary story to class; we will also discuss Nickel and Dimed.
Thursday and Friday, you will write an in-class essay on Nickel and Dimed.

Let it rain!

Students, today we did the following in class:

Ninth graders: 

We reviewed the ten words on which you will be tested, as well as started your personal writing.  Tomorrow, you will bring your summer reading work to class.  If you are done with your summer reading project, I will have something for you to do.

Monday, you will be tested on the following ten words:  amiable, diligent, ebullient, empathetic, gregarious, insightful, jocular, laconic, steadfast, vivacious.  You should know these words as well as you know the word "dog."

Juniors:

Today we worked through multiple choice, AP-style questions based on passages from Wuthering Heights.  Today you also turned in your vocabulary sheet, which you will receive back tomorrow.

Tomorrow we will review the answers.

Monday, you will have a quote test on ROTN or Wuthering Heights.
Tuesday, we will review answers to the quote test.
Wednesday, we will have a graded discussion on Nickel and Dimed.
Thursday and Friday, you will write an in-class essay on N&D.

Hump Day!

Today and the rest of the week in class:

Ninth Graders:

Today was the last day to submit your Policies and Procedures signature sheet for full credit.

Today we discussed the Nikki Giovanni poem "ego tripping," discussed the summer reading project, and also completed a vocabulary puzzle.  We will reinforce vocabulary and write some the next two days.  Please remember that our test on Monday is on the following ten words:

amiable, diligent, ebullient, empathetic, gregarious, insightful, jocular, laconic, steadfast, and vivacious.

Juniors:

Today was the last day to submit your Policies and Procedures signature sheet for full credit.

Today we watched three clips from the 1939 version of Wuthering Heights and wrote a short essay specifically discussing same.

Tomorrow your vocabulary sheet is due.  If you have misplaced that sheet, please e-mail me before 10:00 p.m., and I will send you an electronic copy.

Tomorrow we will also complete AP style multiple choice questions.

Friday we will review the answers to the multiple choice questions.

Day two!

Ninth graders:

Today we reviewed vocabulary words and read Gallagher's college essay as well as Giovanni's poem "ego tripping."  Please remember that the last page of your Policies and Procedures is due tomorrow!  If you have lost it, please e-mail me, lseward@houstonisd.org, and I will send you a copy.

Juniors:

Please remember that the last page of your Policies and Procedures is due tomorrow! If for some reason you find yourself without it, please e-mail me, and I will send you a new copy.

You also received a new vocabulary list today, which is due Thursday.  Your vocabulary story is due Tuesday, August 30th, on turnitin.com and in class on Wednesday, August 31st.

Tomorrow, we will review a film clip from Wuthering Heights and briefly discuss ROTN.  We will also write a bit.

First Day of School for 9th and 11th!

Hello everyone!

I truly enjoyed meeting you all and, because of you, have a good feeling about this year.  Please check below for your assignments:

Ninth grade:  I distributed your Policies and Procedures, the last page of which you will complete and return to me by Wednesday for a homework grade.  We will discuss the summer reading assignment this week and also do a bit of writing.

Juniors:  Policies and Procedures assignment (last page) is due on Wednesday; quote test on W/H or ROTN is on Monday.  You will write an in-class essay on Nickel and Dimed later in the second week of school.  See me if you are experiencing difficulty with the summer reading.

Please bring your books (W/H or ROTN and Nickel and Dimed) every day until further notice.
