Your new assignment is to read and annotate Nickel and Dimed through page 150 by Tuesday.  I will probably pick up annotations, and you will have a quote quiz.

Early D

Ninth graders read our book and write SARs based on the book.  Tomorrow you will write short answers; Friday you will write a STAAR essay.

Seniors are catching up on their reading.  Do not work on your essay until I return them on Monday.  You need to read and annotate through page 194 of the Tortilla Curtain for Monday.  Bring your books Friday and read.
 
Juniors make sure that you bring to class Nickel and Dimed both Thursday and Friday.  Read and annotate through page 101 by Tuesday.
 
Do your best.  Then do a little more.  See you Monday.

Toooooosday

Ninth graders did the following:  wrote a three paragraph essay based on loyalty using yesterday's writing as a rough draft; and read ATDPTI.

AP Juniors wrote a page on the benefits and drawbacks of being an autodidact, submitted Frederick Douglass annotations, reviewed AP M/C answers, received a new book, Nickel and Dimed, watched and wrote about a video, and read Zoot Suit
 
You all turned in at the end of class:  Staples annotations; Staples M/C; Douglass annotations; writing on autodidactism; and writing on the video.

Your assignment is to read and annotate through page 101 of Nickel and Dimed for Tuesday.  If you would like extra credit, read and annotate through the end of the chapter, page 119.

Monday is not mundane

Ninth graders wrote a page on loyalty and watched a DVD on capitalization.  Eighth period also read ATDPTI and write STAAR SARs.

Seniors wrote a vocabulary paragraph, highlighted their first drafts to identify thesis and topic sentences, textural support and commentary, and completed a vocabulary story written by the one and only Kevin Yunda.
 
You must read and annotate through page 142 of The Tortilla Curtain by Wednesday.
 
The next draft of your essay is due on Monday, November 25, 2013.
 
I will be gone (don't cry) on Friday.  In the meantime, learn your vocabulary words, read, and write.  I want you to dazzle your college professors with your diligence and brilliance.

TGIF

Today Ninth graders finished their DLA.  Good focus, ninth grade!


AP Juniors reviewed several rhetorical terms and completed a set of AP-MC questions on "Black Men and Public Space."  We will continue to discuss these questions on Tuesday, so please bring your copy of this article if you took it with you.
 
Also for Tuesday, please read and annotate Frederick Douglass's "Learning to Read and Write."  If you missed class today, you may stop by and pick up a copy on Monday or you may access Douglass on the following link:
 
 
 
 
AP Seniors discussed the first few pages of our new book The Tortilla Curtain and took a quote quiz, which also included vocabulary words, which you should know.
 
On Monday, AP seniors must bring their first draft of their essay on The Catcher in the Rye to class. 
 
On Wednesday, AP seniors should have read and annotated through page 142 of The Tortilla Curtain.

WILDCATS IN THE PLAYOFFS!!!!

Ninth graders continued work on the DLA.  Tomorrow is the last day to complete this test.
 
Juniors discussed "Black Men and Public Space."  I am writing this entry before seventh period, but a HUGE shout-out to third period for their scholarly annotations!!!!!  Impressive.  Juniors wrote a descriptive paragraph about someone they would view as threatening, rhetorically analyzed "BMPS," read Zoot Suit, and completed a vocabulary exercise.
 
It's a beautiful day at Wheatley High School.  You all make me very happy to be here.

Ninth grader took a DLA today, which they will continue to do through the end of the week.

Seniors began to compose their essays on Catcher in the Rye.  A draft of your essay is due on Monday, November 18, 2013.  Pages 1-29 of the Tortilla Curtain are due on Friday.  Read and annotate!Fun!

Students, please note the following:

Ninth graders have been working on writing STAAR expository essays.  Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will take the District Level Assessment that will tell us how best to prepare for the STAAR test.

Juniors had a quote test today on Malcolm X and submitted their X annotations for a grade.  For Thursday, please read and annotate the essay "Black Men and Public Space."  If you missed class today, a link to the article appears below:
 

Seniors took a quote test on Metamorphosis on Monday and submitted those books for a grade.  On Wednesday, please bring the following:  Your graded Catcher essay; your orange assignment sheet; your copy of Catcher; a lot of paper and your favorite writing instrument.  We will also start our new book, Tortilla Curtain, on Wednesday, so bring it if you have it!

TGIF

On Friday, you all did the following:

Ninth graders wrote in response to this question:  if you could have dinner with anyone in the world, living or dead, famous or familiar, who would it be?  Why?  Where and what would you eat?  What would you talk about?  Some classes also read our book.

Juniors wrote a page on a Malcolm X related theme, submitted their written discussion questions, and participated in a Socratic seminar.  Juniors will have a quote test on Tuesday, the same day your Malcolm X annotations for the entire book are due.  To study for your quote test, please focus on the following pages: 1-165; 230-237; 271-293; 325-389.

Seniors wrote a page, turned in their Metamorphosis discussion questions, listened to Ms. Wheatley and me give presentations on Kafka's life, and discussed the book.  On Monday you will have a quote test on Metamorphosis and you will turn in your annotations on that book.

The Penulitimate Day of the School Week

Ninth graders did the following today: 
 
Warm-up - write a page about what would you do if you were the king or queen of the class, school, Houston, Texas, United States, or world?
 
Read The Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian.
 
Took a reading quiz and wrote a vocabulary sentence.

Juniors:
 
Read a bit from the Absolutely True Diary of a Part Time Indian because we pondered the intensity with which we should live our lives.
 
Discussed Malcolm X and took a quote quiz.
 
Read Zoot Suit.
 
Bring seven (7) written questions on Malcolm X for a Socratic seminar.

Hump Day

Ninth grader wrote a vocabulary paragraph (or two), received their progress reports, completed their make-up work, and some classes read and took a reading quiz.  Eighth period attempted to solved Jolie's puzzle.

Seniors received progress reports, finished their hexagonal writing on Catcher in the Rye, read and analyzed the Robert Frost poem "Out, Out," and began composing an essay noting the commonalities between "Out, Out" and either Catcher in the Rye or Metamorphosis.
 
Friday please bring to class the following:
 Ten (10) discussion questions on Metamorphosis
Catcher in the Rye:
Metamorphosis;
Your orange assignment sheet; and
your graded essay from Catcher in the Rye.
 
You will submit Metamorphosis annotations on Monday.  Also on Monday, you will take a Metamorphosis TEST.
 
Your essay will be due Friday, November 15, 2013.  Please note that this is a change from your assignment sheet.

Tuesday!

Ninth graders played vocabulary BINGO today and read ATDPTI.

Juniors were to have read through page 270 of Malcolm X today.  Very few students were current with their reading.  Please make your decision now.  If you do not read for class, you will not pass this class - period.  You will have a quote quiz on pages 271-289 on Thursday.  We will have a Socratic Seminar on Friday.  You will have a TEST on Malcolm X on Tuesday, November 12th.  I will also pick up the books that day for annotation grade.

Monday, Monday

Ninth graders completed their CBA test, completed a BINGO sheet, and completed and submitted homework for a late grade. Eighth period also completed a vocabulary puzzle.
 
Seniors took a quote quiz on Metamorphosis, finished highlighting an AP essay and began to write the details of The Catcher in the Rye (hexagonal writing) so that you can remember that book in May for the AP test.  Please bring the following to class on Wednesday: The Catcher in the Rye, Metamorphosis, your highlighted essay, and your graded essay.  I have your hexagonal writing.
 
I will probably take up your copy of Metamorphosis for a annotation grade on Wednesday.

TGIF - After trick or treating

Ninth graders turned in homework today and started to take a CBA.  Your homework is due TODAY!!!!!!!!  If you did not have your homework TODAY, PLEASE complete it this weekend for a late grade.
 
Juniors read, discussed, and annotated Malcolm X.  Read and annotate through page 370 for Tuesday, November 5th, and through page 389 for Thursday, November 7th, which is the end of the book.  You will have a TEST on X on Friday, November 8, 2013.
 
Seniors began to analyze an AP essay.  We will continue to do so on Monday.  For Monday, you must have read and annotated Metamorphosis.  We will have a quote quiz or a graded discussion on that book for the first 30 minutes of class.  Bring your book (Metamorphosis).
 
Seniors, also bring your graded Catcher essay and your copy of Catcher.  We will finish reading and highlighting the AP essay, and I will assign a revised version of the essay you wrote.  It will be due on Friday, November 8th.
