Today is Hump Day

Ninth graders did the following:

First Period finished the book!!!!!!!!!!  You also completed the second review vocabulary sheet for your final exam and completed a vocabulary puzzle and a homophone sheet.

Sixth, Eighth, and Ninth Periods did the following:

Wet ink
Completed their vocabulary collages;
Completed their trees or comic strips; and
Started their ATDPTI questions.

Final Review Sheet for Ninth Grade – Fall 2013

Vocabulary – all three sheets:  the pink sheet (vocabulary from “The Most Dangerous Game”), the yellow sheet (the list with “anthropology”); and the list with the vocabulary from Ender’s Game.

You will need to fill in the blanks of a vocabulary story that I write.  You may also need to write sentences or a short story with the words.

Capitalization rules – The rules that we reviewed with the video. 

1.     Capitalize the first letter of the first word of a sentence.

2.     Capitalize the pronoun “I.”

3.     Capitalize proper nouns and words derived from proper nouns.  Proper nouns are the names of specific persons, places, and things.

4.     Capitalize the first letter of adjectives that are made from the name of specific persons, places, and things.

5.     Capitalize titles of persons when used as part of a proper name, but do not capitalize them when used alone.

6.     Capitalize the first letter of directions when they are used to designate actual places, but not when they point in a direction. 

7.     Capitalize the first word in a quoted sentence.

8.     Capitalize holidays, months, and days of the week.  Do not capitalize seasons.

9.     Capitalize the first, past, and all important words in a title, but do NOT capitalize the following words:  a, an, the, for, to, of on, from, and, or, but.

Homophonesthey’re, there, their; principal, principle; to, two, too; bear, bare; it’s, its; peace, piece; stationary, stationery; quite, quiet; piece, peace; we’re, were; dessert, desert; brake, break.
 

“The Most Dangerous Game”

1.     Who is the protagonist and why?

2.     Who is the antagonist and why?

3.     What is the story’s setting?

4.     What kind of foreshadowing does the story contain?

5.     What is the story’s conflict?

6.     How is the story resolved?  In other words, what is the story’s denouement?

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian

1.     Who is the protagonist and why is he a “part-time” Indian?

2.     Who is Arnold’s best friend?  How do you know that they are best friends?

3.     How does Sherman Alexie, the author, portray Rowdy?  What are Rowdy’s characteristics, and what is his family like?

4.     What is the event that motivated Arnold to change schools?

5.     Describe Gordie and Penelope and explain why they are important to Arnold?

6.     Describe the characters of Eugene, Arnold’s grandmother, and Arnold’s sister, Mary, and explain why each is important.  How did each character die, and why are these deaths important to Arnold?

7.     Describe the challenges that Arnold experiences at Reardan High School.

8.     How does Reardan High School differ from Wellpinit High School?

9.     Describe the conflicts that Arnold faces.

10.                        Describe Arnold’s relationship with his parents.

SARs – You will also need to write STAAR SAR answers to questions based on your book or on a passage.  Remember that you need to follow the ABC format:  Answer the question; include words from the Book or text; and Connect your answer to your textual support with a comment.

 
Seniors worked in groups and took a quote quiz.  I will have your review sheet for you on Friday.  However, please note that all of our vocabulary will be on the final exam.  You will also write a short answer and an essay.
