Writing Assignments the
Week of September 8 – 12, 2014
Assignment #1 – Do
Unmarked Women Really Exist?
Field work – now that you have read Deborah
Tannen’s “There is No Unmarked Woman,” it is time to put Tannen’s theory to the
test. First, please confirm Tannen’s theory by writing it here:
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________.
Second, test Tannen’s theory by conducting
an observation in a safe, public place such as a sporting event, a mall, a
restaurant, church, or a park. Observe
the women in your chosen forum and note your reaction to and evaluation of these
women. Do you instantly, even subconsciously,
classify these women as a “type”? If so,
do you also similarly classify the men you see?
Third, provide evidence of your fieldwork
as follows: Choose three specific women
and three specific men to observe and on whom to write a brief profile. In your profiles, describe the physical
characteristics, body language, and reasonably inferred attitude of each of
these subjects. At the end of each
description, state your evaluation of your chosen subject. Your evaluation may include the following traits:
educational background, marital status, profession, hobbies, temperament,
political persuasion, religious beliefs, sense of humor, or talents. Each of your profiles should be one detailed
paragraph in length.
Finally, in your last paragraph (following
your six profiles and evaluations), test your conclusions against Tannen’s
theory. Was it easier for you to draw
conclusions about your female subjects?
Your male subjects? Neither?
Your paper is due at the BOC on Wednesday,
September 10, 2014.
Caveat: Although it would be tempting to snap a photo
of your subjects or to approach them in some way, your safety dictates
otherwise. Confine your observations to
a well-lit, safe public place, conduct your field work with a friend or family
member, and keep a safe distance from all unknown persons. This assignment simply requires you to people
watch as many of us do routinely. The
only difference is that this time you are writing about what you see and what
you think as you people watch.
Assignment #2 - Vocabulary
Story
Please enhance your knowledge of the twenty words from The Handmaid’s Tale list by writing one
of the following:
A story with 18 of the 20 words used in context; or
An illustrated story with 15 of the 20 words AND at least 8
illustrations (think Persepolis as
inspiration).
Your story is due at
the BOC, Friday, September 12, 2014.
