SAT here we come!

Studs, today you all registered for the SAT and did a little vocabulary.com.  As of the time of this entry's publication, Gaby C. is in the lead with over 80,000 points!!!!!!

 

Please note the following dates:  Tomorrow bring your book.  If you submit annotations, you may earn up to 110 points.  If not, submit them next week for no late penalty.

 

Friday?  Bring an blue or black ink pen.  Recite "Invictus" for extra credit and watch a movie after school for extra credit.

 

Monday the 16th?  Your source assignment is due on turnitin.com on or before 11:59  (examples are below).   BTW, titles of books, movies, television shows, magazines, and newspapers are italicized. 

 

Tuesday the 17th?  Vocabulary sentences are due on turnitin.com on or before 11:50 (examples are on your blue vocabulary.com handout).
 

Wednesday the 18th?  Bring a hard copy of your vocabulary sentences to class; if you need to print, please do so BEFORE the bell rings.
 

Thursday the 19th?  Discuss In Cold Blood.
 

Friday the 20th?  Annotations for the entire book are due AND you will have a test on Parts III and IV of In Cold Blood.

 

Examples of Sources:

 

Invictus  - In order to heal his country of South Africa, it first indigenous president, Nelson Mandela, integrates his security forces with Caucasian men (formerly of apartheid's secret police SAVAK) and indigenous Africans, many of whom had been tortured under SAVAK's reign of terror.  Taking a further step toward reconciliation, Mandel champions South Africa's rugby team, The Springboks, which had formerly symbolized Afrikaaner oppression under apartheid.  Mandela's perseverance pays off as the rugby team prevails in the World Cup, and, in doing so, helps South Africa take a critical step toward unification. 

 

In an essay I could use Invictus as an example of leadership, determination, courage, teamwork, or reconciliation.

 

Modern Family - This sitcom stems from the adventures (and misadventures) of three branches and generations of an extended family.  One of the branches features a gay, male married couple who have adopted a baby girl from Vietnam.  Modern Family has won numerous awards and is also noteworthy for its depiction of the gay couple, Mitchell and Cameron, as multi-dimensional, intelligent professionals whose domestic issues are remarkable primarily because they are so unremarkable.

 

In an essay I could use Modern Family to illustrate how society has evolved and become more tolerant and open-minded as the decades have passed.
