Today (Thursday, September 16, 2010) in class you completed a vocabulary check covering the first 20 words from the second vocabulary list (aka First K Boy list).

We then discussed briefly the efficacy of the TRC, as well as the concepts of amnesty and forgiveness in general.  You then wrote in your journals about this concept, using some form of outside evidence to support your thoughts.  We also read and pondered the following quotes in class, printed in blue for your ease of reference.

“Forgiveness does not change the past, but it does enlarge the future.”   Paul Boese.

“If there are dreams about a beautiful South Africa, there are also roads that lead to this goal.  Two of these roads could be named Goodness and Forgiveness.”  Nelson Mandela

“Forgiveness is the key to action and freedom.” Hannah Arendt

“As I rejected amnesty, so I reject revenge.  I ask all Americans whoever asked for goodness and mercy in their lives, whoever sought forgiveness for their trespasses, to join in rehabilitating all of the casualties of the tragic conflict of the past.” Gerald Ford

“Equilibrium is when within the process there’s a “good balance” between justice and peace, which makes it clear that there must be reparation for the society and for the victims and that an amnesty or pardon cannot take in atrocious crimes.”  Alvaro Uribe

“We want an indictment; we want justice.” Rodney van Dunk

“Justice denied anywhere diminishes justice everywhere.”  Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

“To be left alone, and face to face with my own crime, had been just retribution.” Henry Wadsworth Longfellow

"An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."  Mahatma Gandhi

Monday your vocabulary assignment is due.

Monday you will also have a test on the first two vocabulary lists, the information regarding South Africa, and any religious holiday we have discussed in class.

Tuesday part one of K Boy, "The Road to Alexandra' is due, meaning you should have read and annotated Part One.  Be ready for a quote quiz.

Have a wonderful three-day weekend!
